How to Make Garden Gnomes Salt & Pepper Shakers
Liven up a picnic or backyard barbecue with these whimsical Garden Gnomes Salt and Pepper Shakers. Even beginning crafters can sculpt these charming characters while practicing techniques like shaping clay and adding texture.
Sculpt facial features
Flatten out the green clay and wrap it around each shaker 3/4 of the way up. Add in all the features of the face as separate shapes using the flesh color. Use a toothpick to make nostrils for the nose. Make 2 smaller flatter circles out of white clay for the eyes. Make the triangles for the eye lids curve outside so the gnome will look happy. Make another small triangle that is flat at 1 point and puffy at an edge for the lip. Attach it to the shaker leaving space for the mustache.
Add facial hair
Roll out a snake shape of black clay to add in a beard and the hair all around the face and mustache. The swirly pattern is achieved by twisting in a smaller snake of white clay into the black snake. Make 2 teardrop shapes for the mustache and attach them under the nose, making sure to curl up the ends. Make downward marks in the clay with a toothpick to look like hair. Make the white beard in the same fashion with white clay only.
Make the hat
Make a large ball from the red clay and turn it into a cone shape. Push a finger into the bottom and start thinning the walls. Take a small bit of yellow clay, flatten it out and cut out a square and add it anywhere on the hat as a patch. Use a toothpick to make tiny stitching lines. Fit the hat over the shaker.
Bake & paint details
Bake shakers at 230 degrees for 30 minutes on a metal tray or tile, then allow to cool completely. Paint in the eyes with acrylic paint, adding a tiny white dot for the sparkle. Create rosy cheeks with pink paint.
