How to Make a Paper Moon Shadow Box

Decorate your space with an out of this world Paper Moon Shadow Box! Use celestial inspired cardstock to create a planet, moons and stars and then add moon lights to make your own special galaxy shine at night.
  • 1 Cut Deep Navy cardstock

Cut the Deep Navy cardstock 6" x 8" to fit inside of the shadow box. Tape the cardstock in place.

  • 2 Add hole to box

Use an awl to punch a hole near the bottom of the box.

  • 3 Add moon lights to frame

Feed the end of the moon lights up through the back of the frame. Tape the battery pack to the back of the frame.

  • 4 Use tape to attach moon lights

Cut twenty-seven, 1" sections of adhesive foam tape. Triple stack the sections and arrange inside the frame about 3/4" from edges (this makes nine stacks). Wind the moon lights around the nine foam stacks.

  • 5 Cut paper into 6" x 8" pieces

Cut the Pearl Moon, Scuba Diver, Dress Blues and Intense Cobalt cardstock into 6" x 8" pieces.

  • 6 Begin creating circles

Position a die cut circle (cut side against paper) on the back of each sheet created in the previous step. Hold in place with washi tape. The smallest circle will be 2" from the top right and 1" from the right side.

  • 7 Create additional circles

Die cut four circles from four blue sheets of cardstock-range from a small circle on the Pearl Moon cardstock to the largest circle on the Intense Cobalt cardstock.

  • 8 Attach circles to frame

Stack and arrange the four sheets so the circles are off-center. Attach the cardstock together with Hercules® tape. Place this stack into the frame an attach to the nine foam stacks.

  • 9 Create moons

Cut two moons from the Pearl Moon and Grapevine cardstock and stack off-center. Position and overlap the left side of the cut circles. Refer to photo as a guide.

  • 10 Cut stars and planet

Cut the stars and planet from the Copper and Gold Vellum cardstock. Cut four large and four small stars.

  • 11 Create frame border

Cut the Dress Blues cardstock sheet to 8" x 10". Measure and mark a 1.5" border around and cut an opening using a paper trimmer or straight edge and an X-ACTO® knife. Attach the border to the top of the frame.

  • 12 Add stars to frame

Using the photo as your guide, arrange two stars in the circle opening. Arrange the remaining stars on the Intense Cobalt cardstock and on the frames border.
