How to Make Yarn Wrapped Letters

You will love making these yarn wrapped paper mache letters! Spell out love, your initials or any other word that suits your space. You can even customize your letters by picking your favorite colors of yarn to wrap them.

  • 1 Start with petal pink

For the letter L, cut several short strands of petal pink yarn and glue them in sections to the very top edge of the letter. Trim any excess fringe.

  • 2 Then cut shocking pink

Cut several short strands of shocking pink yarn and glue them in sections to the top and the very bottom of the L’s base. Trim any excess fringe.

  • 3 Start wrapping

Starting at the top of the letter, glue the end of the petal pink yarn to the back of the letter and begin wrapping. Be sure to wrap in a uniform direction. Stop wrapping just before the bottom of the L’s base and hot glue the end to the back.

  • 4 Glue the end

Glue the end of the shocking pink yarn to the back of the letter about ¾ of the way down. To create the ombre color effect, overlap the petal pink by leaving large spaces, which gradually get tighter.

  • 5 Keep wrapping

Continue wrapping the remainder of the letter in the same uniform, horizontal direction until it is covered. Tuck the end of the yarn underneath the other layers and glue it to secure

  • 6 Repeat the pattern

Repeat the same basic wrapping process for the letters V and E. Be sure that the ombre effect runs straight across both letters.

  • 7 Wind yarn onto a bobbin

For the O, wind a large amount of petal pink yarn around a bobbin, piece of cardboard or anything that will easily fit through the center of the O.

  • 8 Wrap the bottom curve

Begin wrapping at the bottom curve of the O and continue until the bobbin runs out. Re-wrap the bobbin and pick up where you left off.

  • 9 Repeat with shocking pink yarn

Repeat steps 7 and 8 with the shocking pink yarn. Make sure the ombre effect runs straight around the L and the O. Hide and secure the end of the yarn when finished.

  • 10 Stack and display

Stack and display the completed letters.
