  • 1 Coat with gel stain Rustic Wood Wedding Sign

Coat the front and the sides of the wedding sign with the walnut colored gel stain. Wipe off any excess with a rag or paper towel. Let dry completely.

  • 2 Dry brush with paint Rustic Wood Wedding Sign

Paint the sign with paint using a "dry brush" method. Dab a very small amount of paint onto the paint brush, then wipe most of it off on a paper plate or towel. Swiftly move the brush over the entire front of the sign. Allow the sign to dry completely before continuing.

  • 3 Paint lines Rustic Wood Wedding Sign

Use a sponge brush to paint lines of darker areas using the stain. Wait 3 minutes and wipe off any excess. Let dry completely.

  • 4 Sand to add texture Rustic Wood Wedding Sign

Use sandpaper to add texture to the surface and edges of the sign. Concentrate the sanding in some areas to achieve a worn and rustic look.

  • 5 Thin the stain Rustic Wood Wedding Sign

Mix 1 part gel stain with 1 part water to make a thin version of the dark gel stain.

  • 6 Wipe with mixture Rustic Wood Wedding Sign

Brush this mixture over the wedding sign, then immediately wipe it off with a rag or paper towel. Let the sign dry completely.

  • 7 Thin the paint Rustic Wood Wedding Sign

Make a mixture of 1 part white paint and 1 part water to create a thinned out paint.

  • 8 Wipe with mixture Rustic Wood Wedding Sign

Brush the thinned mixture over the entire front of the sign, then wipe it away with a rag or paper towel. Let dry completely.

  • 9 Sand to add texture Rustic Wood Wedding Sign

Use sandpaper to add texture to the surface and edges. Concentrate in small areas to make them appear rougher than others.

  • 10 Dry brush with paint Rustic Wood Wedding Sign

Dry brush white paint over the top of the signs one last time.

  • 11 Add lettering Rustic Wood Wedding Sign

Mix black paint with a touch of white to create a very dark gray color. Either use a stencil or free hand writing on the sign.

  • 12 Sand lettering Rustic Wood Wedding Sign

Allow the lettering to dry and go over it heavily with sandpaper. Wear the lettering off completely in some areas.

  • 13 Finish the edges Rustic Wood Wedding Sign

Use a dry brush to go over all of the edges of the sign with white paint. You can also use it to touch up the lettering or to finish the back of the sign. Let the sign dry completely.
