How to Make Slip Stitch Hat and Mitts

  • Shown in Adult Small size.

Measurements:
  • Hat Circumference: 21 ¾” (22 ¾)”

  • 16 sts x 22 rows = 4” in St st. using larger needles

    The color changes are achieved by slipping stitches, thereby carrying up color from previous rows. Only one color per row is used. 
    Carry unused colors loosely up the side of the work. 
    Both Hat and Fingerless Mitts are worked back and forth in rows and then seamed.

    Rep Rows 1-2, 4 more times. 

  • 5 Hat body

    Switch to larger ndl. 
    Inc row (RS): K3 (5), *kfb, k8; rep from * 7 more times, knit to end – 87 (91) sts. Purl 1 row. Work Rows 1-26 of Slip Stitch and Texture patt. Cut all colors except D. 
    Next row (RS): Knit. 
    Next row (WS): Purl. 
    Continue in St st for 2 more rows. 

  • 6 Shape crown

    Small Size Only: 
    Set-up row 1 (RS): K1, k2tog, k41, k2tog, knit to end – 85 sts rem. 
    Medium Size Only

    Row 1 (RS): K1, *p1, k1; rep from * to end. 
    Row 2 (WS): P1, *k1, p1; rep from * to end. 
    Rep Rows 1-2, 2 more times. 

  • 8 Main mitt

    Switch to larger ndl. 
    Knit 1 row. Purl 1 row. Work Rows 1-26 of Slip Stitch and Texture patt. Cut all colors except D. 
    Next row (RS): Knit. 
    Next row (WS): Purl. 
    Continue in St st until piece meas 7 ¼ (7 ¾)” from cast-on edge, ending with WS row. 

  • 9 Upper cuff

    Switch to smaller ndl. 
    Row 1 (RS): K1, *p1, k1; rep from * to end. 
    Row 2 (WS): P1, *k1, p1; rep from * to end. 
    Rep Rows 1-2, 2 more times. 
    Bind off all sts loosely in patt leaving an 8” tail. 

  • 10 Finishing

    Hat 
    Sew side seam with tail. Weave in ends and block. 

    Fingerless Mitts 
    Sew upper edge of seam along the rows from the side of Upper Cuff ribbing using bind-off tail. Sew lower edge of seam from cast-on edge to 2 rows above Slip Stitch and Texture patt, leaving 2 ¼ (2 ¾)” unsewn for thumb opening. Weave in ends and block.
